From a Writer: A Few Unique Thoughts for Websites Accepting Guest Articles

Understanding the ins and outs of your business means understanding your audience. When it comes to accepting guest articles on your website, the potential writers are essentially your audience. You can offer them a great backlink, but that’s no long something special anymore (every company has caught on to why that’s important).

You want to create a great place for your contributors, and that means listening to their observations. Below are some of the things that writers notice when it comes time to guest post on a website:

From a Writer: A Few Unique Thoughts for Websites Accepting Guest Articles

Understanding the ins and outs of your business means understanding your audience. When it comes to accepting guest articles on your website, the potential writers are essentially your audience. You can offer them a great backlink, but that’s no long something special anymore (every company has caught on to why that’s important).

You want to create a great place for your contributors, and that means listening to their observations. Below are some of the things that writers notice when it comes time to guest post on a website:

  • There is nothing worse than writing for a site that doesn’t allow you to subscribe to comments.

Subscribing to comments on a post that you’ve written is great because you don’t have to keep checking back to see if someone commented. It shows up right in your inbox, and you can be sure to you’re replying to everything, even months later. It’s good for the website, the writer, and those commenting, so it’s worth the little bit of extra time it takes to make it happen.

  • Telling a writer about other sites that you own is like hitting the jackpot.

If you own more than one website, mention that to writers that ask to contribute to your site. In many cases, the writer will be able to contribute to that site as well, so it’s a win-win situation.

  • Telling a writer you are not going to accept an article is much better than just ignoring the issue.

It seems that sometimes editors don’t think that writers want their inboxes full of “no thank you,” so it’s better to avoid sending an email altogether. This is certainly not the case. Even if you want to be very short with a writer, it’s better to get something than nothing at all. This will help the writer stop wondering what’s going on with a particular article and get them out of limbo.

  • If you don’t have an actual email address on your contact page, a writer might move to a new site.

There are absolutely pros to not putting a physical email address on your contact page (spammers, for one), but in some cases this isn’t ideal for writers. Many writers like to write articles first and then try and send the article to a website. Websites are often more responsive when this happens because they know that you’re serious. You don’t have to sit there and wait to maybe get a response from a random contact page that you filled out (and therefore have no record of in your inbox). It’s just not ideal.

So what’s the moral of the story for small businesses? If you want to accept guest articles on your blog, keeping these things in mind will give you a better chance of creating a good relationship with your writers. This doesn’t mean that you have to make your guest posting process easy, but just be aware of some of the things that will help writers be more successful (and ultimately help you become more successful).

Optimize Your Flash Site for Search Engines

t’s my second most hated site to optimize: Flash. For an SEO, Flash websites list right up there with Javascript sites, which is my first nemesis. More and more of my clients are having their sites done in flash, then handing me the site, and saying, “Now, turn water into wine, please; and make it a Chardonnay…” So instead of moaning, complaining, wheedling and whining, I’ve found other things to do instead.

The first time I optimized a Flash site, it was a disaster. But since then, I’ve learned some very effective ways to optimize a Flash site. What seemed miraculous in the beginning isn’t as daunting a task as it needs to be. While I still hate to optimize flash, and I question the wisdom of doing so, there is no getting around it these days.

Flash does provide a great user experience, and can definitely increase sales. After all, people are very visually stimulated, and it is often the flashy sites that attract the customer to actually buy the product. If it looks great, then it must be great, right? I admit, I counsel against using Flash sites because they are so difficult to optimize, and frankly, make my job harder. But even I love to watch movies, and Flash is very impressive. People like interactivity, and Flash does provide them a method to get potential customers involved in a site.

As an SEO, you understand the importance of search engine rankings, and the best methods on achieving positioning. But to your client, what they really want are sales, and for visitors to buy their product and turn into customers. They want all that and more. So even if they understand the importance of what you are trying to convey to them, they still want the pretty site, because perception is everything. They know they may have the best product in the world, but if the package is ugly, people are less likely to buy. And they believe this about their website also. So it’s your job to make them happy, and ultimately, bring them the sales. They want the pretty site, packaged in the glossy box, and they want it optimized in the same breath. You can try to convince them of your view, but in the end, they want their cake and eat it too.

So how do you accomplish all that? Here are a few ways to increase user experience without sacrificing ranking.

Use Flash movies, not sites
Crawler based search engines still prefer html versus images, flash, and other scripts. But if you embed your glitzy flash movies into your content-rich HTML, you will still get the benefits of optimization. While search engines like Google, AtomzSearch, HotBot, and FAST engines (AlltheWeb, InfoSpace, and Lycos) are getting better at extracting links from flash sites, it is still very difficult for them, and other third party search engines have made no mention of extracting useful information from Flash. Yahoo claims they can read .swf files, but so far I’ve not seen any evidence that they read enough content to usefully rank a Flash site in its index.

A better way to incorporate Flash, if indeed your client must have it, is to first create an HTML site, and then use Flash movies in place of images, buttons, and banners. These areas are usually of little importance to a search engine anyway, so it seems fine to do it this way. In which case, optimizing this type of site is no different than optimizing a plain ole HTML site. This is my top recommendation for Flash.

Just as you would caution against using images for your important text, keywords, and other important aspects of your site, the same reasoning applies to Flash in these cases. If you are using several competitive keywords, then you will be well advised to split your pages up by topic, instead of using one web page, and then using multiple Flash movies for each page.

Use Splash Pages Sparingly and Appropriately
Everyone seems to love a great Flash intro. But even to a charmed visitor, multiple splash pages with no way out get tiresome. You should give your visitors the option to advance past the intro on their own, without the nasty redirect, which a lot of Flash intros use to send the visitor to the actual content of the site. We know the search engine spiders do not like redirects. So let your visitor take control over their experience.

On the flip side, you should have more than a single entry point into your site. No, I’m not talking about creating a bunch of doorway pages and redirecting them to your Flash site. I’m talking about optimizing each page of your site according to its content.

Don’t have one splash page as your entry point, and then compile all of the movies into that single page. This forces the visitor to have to return to the beginning just to get to another place in your site. If you need an “About Us” page, then create a separate page, and optimize it. Create another “Articles” page, optimize it, and so on. But please, don’t create a splash page for each. Even your visitors won’t like that very much.

The Macromedia Software Developer Kit (SDK)
Macromedia’s Search Engine SDK includes an application that is called swf2html, which extracts links and text from a flash movie, then returns the data into an HTML file. Users of this SDK can add functionality by adding Flash file decompression, parsing, and indexing features to their server-based search applications. While Macromedia is working with a number of third-party search engines in this regard, they haven’t announced any specific search engine support.

The Macromedia Search Engine SDK is designed for search engine application teams. What this means to you, the SEO, is an insider’s view to what the search engines actually see. Do your homework: simply to know which search engines utilize the SDK, and optimize the site for those specific search engines.

You can obtain a license for the Search Engine SDK, and extract the text from a flash site itself, so that you know exactly what these types of search engines will see. Usually, the first line of text extracted is perceived as the title, so it is extremely valuable for you to know how to place the text in the flash file. Will this require you to become an expert Flash programmer? No, as long as you are able to convey what you want effectively to the Flash developer.

Be familiar with the filetype operator in Google (filetype:swf typed after a search term). Try any search in Google with this operator. This will demonstrate that this content is extracted from the Flash itself. But just how deep does this extraction go? No one is certain, but with the SDK, you can get a pretty good idea. We do know that all the text from top to bottom is read, which is tested this way: choose an exact search term that’s near the end of your movie, the run your swf2html application. You will see your search term show up in your HTML output file.

Increase your Link Building Strategy
There is more to SEO than just your content. If you must give up some of your crucial text in favor of the slick Flash content, then it is even more important for you to concentrate on your linking strategies. Of course, every SEO should concentrate on this area, but it’s even more important for the Flash site. Use anchor text properly (i.e. “Best SEO Tip” versus “Click here”), link to relevant and complimenting sites, and achieve those precious one way links.

If it is indeed harder for a search engine to find your Flash site, then make it accessible to them by back links. This will also help your traffic when you are not being indexed the way you like in the search engines, especially for those search engines that do not incorporate the SDK technology like MSN.

Prepare to use Pay Per Click Heavily
Web developers must factor in the cost of Pay Per Click (PPC) when building a Flash site. A budget for this type of advertising must be included in the cost of developing the site, as it seems that the search engines may be getting better at reading Flash, they still don’t index Flash sites quickly, if at all. In fact, one AltaVista engineer reported that it wasn’t a priority, and had no intentions on including reading Flash into their search engine. Be aware, also, that Google’s AdSense officiallydoes not read .swf files. So in this sense, you may rely more heavily upon PPC than if you used a full HTML site.

Build an HTML site, and incorporate Flash later
Some web developers choose to develop a website in HTML first, then once they’ve established search engine positioning and PageRank, add Flash later on. While this sparks a bit of controversy in the ideology of this method, it appears that established sites that already index well who add Flash to their sites at a later date do not seem to suffer the same effects of a new site done in Flash. It would be a good topic of discussion in the SEO Chat forums.

Better yet, create a low-res HTML version of your Flash site, and let the users choose their preference. That way, you have the best of both worlds: a Flash site for the visitors wanting the glamour, and an HTML site for the search engine spiders and for those visitors on dial up.

Using CSS Layers
A method I have seen used is creating invisible layers in CSS, which can place invisible text over the Flash text, readable by search engines, yet not appearing to the human eye. I will caution strongly against this method, as I believe it is very similar to cloaking. However, the controversy arises because while cloaking is presenting one set of text information to visitors, then another to search engines, the search engines can detect this type of practice as spam, and the likelihood of banning exists.

The logic behind the invisible layers theory though, is that if the search engines can’t read the Flash in the first place, then how can it know whether or not the text is different than the text presented to the visitor? I believe this is a very risky practice. The moral standard would be that anytime you are presenting information to a search engine that is different than the information presented to a visitor, especially if it is intended to be deceptive, it is considered cloaking; therefore, a black-hat SEO practice.

Because I truly believe after having explored the SDK option, search engines do have the capability of reading flash files, not only will invisible CSS layers duplicate your content, but also these efforts will be perceived as spam. If not right now, then it will happen soon. So my advice is to stay away from this technique, or you could likely find yourself not showing up in the search engine results pages (SERPs) at all.

Other Flash Tips:

  • Use accessibility features in Macromedia’s Studio MX to enhance the Flash. This will help accessibility readers purvey the content to visitors that rely upon the options in their browsers.
  • Make sure Flash links point to HTML pages, not other Flash pages. While the ability of a search engine to follow links in Flash is improving, it may not index content if the link just points to another Flash page.
  • Use static text in a Flash movie, so that these instances are not duplicated, and then are perceived as spam.
  • Recommend to the Flash developer that he use motion tweening as much as possible. Tweening is a term that comes from “in between”. Motion tweening is used when an animation occurs between two keyframes, and the Flash application creates all the frames in between. This also reduces the occurrence of duplicate text.
  • Leave the user with the ability to skip or turn off sounds and animations.
  • Never try to hide text within Flash.

You may have to educate your client on the downside of using a Flash site, and persuade them to use other methods of designing their website, but if you must optimize a Flash site, all hope is not lost. In fact your chances of your Flash movies being read by search engines are very good, and improving all the time. I do believe that the text in a Flash movie can indeed be read by those search engines that implement the SDK technology, whether with support from Macromedia, or with similar technology being utilized.

So can your client have their Flash site without sacrificing rank? You bet. By working with the developer, effectively communicating your strategies to both them and your client, and by understanding the technology used by the SDK, you will find that optimizing a flash site is not miraculous, but sometimes, rather worthwhile. Your client will be thrilled to know that not only can they have their cake; they can eat it too.

7 Specific Google SEO Quality Guidelines

As a white hat SEO practitioner, I take everything the search engines say about SEO very seriously. If Google or Bing declares a particular link building or onsite optimization tactic black hat, then my company tries to avoid it at all costs when executing our clients’ SEO campaigns; I never want to run a client’s website afoul of the search engine SEO quality guidelines. Google’s Webmaster Guidelines are a great resource for site owners and those just getting into SEO because it clearly outlines what is and what isn’t acceptable SEO according to Google. I recently noticed that Google added seven specific SEO quality guidelines, in addition to the basic principles, to help steer site owners down the right path. Here is an overview of those guidelines:

Avoid hidden text or hidden links.
This is a very old school black hat tactic, yet some site owners don’t even realize they are guilty of it. Check out the color scheme of your website—is the font color distinct enough from the background (black on white vs. light gray on white) that it’s obvious where the text is? Trying to hide text or links by matching the font color to the background color used to be a way site owners would stuff their pages with keywords or links to try and trick the search engines, but keep visitors to the site from noticing.

Don’t use cloaking or sneaky redirects.
Cloaking is when you present different content or URLs to your visitors than you do to the search engines. Along those lines, a “sneaky” redirect is when site owners “embed a link in JavaScript that redirects the user to a different page with the intent to show the user a different page than the search engine sees… Like cloaking, this practice is deceptive because it displays different content to users and to Googlebot, and can take a visitor somewhere other than where they intended to go.”

Don’t send automated queries to Google.
Bugging Google with automated messages about how long it is going to take until your site is indexed or updates are taken into effect isn’t going to make it happen any faster. First off, the odds of you getting a real response from a real human at Google are slim to nil. If you have a question about Google’s SEO quality guidelines it’s best to look to the Google Webmaster forums for an answer.

Don’t load pages with irrelevant keywords.
It doesn’t matter how many searches a keyword has in a month if it doesn’t accurately reflect the content on your page! You can tell Google that your site is about apples, but it the content focuses on bananas you’ll never do well for apple related searches. Secondly, stuffing your website with banana-related keywords isn’t a better alternative. You want to keep the flow of your content natural for your readers. There is no “right” number of times that a keyword needs to appear on a page in order for your site to rank well for it.

Don’t create multiple pages, subdomains, or domains with substantially duplicate content.
Google recognizes that a site might have two versions on the same page (web version and printer friendly version), and this duplicate content is actually meant to make for a better user-experience, and not trick the search engines. However, according to Google, site owners should be wary of duplicate content that is “deliberately duplicated across domains in an attempt to manipulate search engine rankings or win more traffic. Deceptive practices like this can result in a poor user experience, when a visitor sees substantially the same content repeated within a set of search results.”

Don’t create pages with malicious behavior, such as phishing or installing viruses, trojans, or other badware.
I feel like this one should be a no-brainer. Don’t turn your website into a scam machine.

Avoid “doorway” pages created just for search engines, or other “cookie cutter” approaches such as affiliate programs with little or no original content.
“Doorway pages are typically large sets of poor-quality pages where each page is optimized for a specific keyword or phrase. In many cases, doorway pages are written to rank for a particular phrase and then funnel users to a single destinationwe frown on practices that are designed to manipulate search engines and deceive users by directing them to sites other than the ones they selected, and that provide content solely for the benefit of search engines.” Don’t try to play both the search engines and the end user. A good user-experience is good SEO!

If your site participates in an affiliate program, make sure that your site adds value. Provide unique and relevant content that gives users a reason to visit your site first.
As Google says, “There is no problem in being an affiliate as long as you create some added value for your users and produce valuable content that gives a user a reason to visit your site.” Website owners should always want to create unique, engaging content that readers are going to find useful. The entirety of your SEO campaign essentially rests on the quality of your content, and your online brand depends on your website’s content to target the right audience and build consumer confidence.

When Will I See the Effects of Onsite Optimization?

This is actually a question I get asked quite frequently from prospects, full service SEO clients, people that attend my SEO workshops and oftentimes in random emails and social media messages. I actually got an email just a few weeks ago from a newsletter subscriber wanting to know if I thought he would see the effects of his onsite optimization within 3-5 months—frankly, that’s a very loaded question and very difficult to answer with any kind of certainty.

My answer? Yes and no.

The truth of the matter is that there are billions upon billions of web pages, images, videos and other forms on content online. Yes, if you publish a blog post it immediately goes live, but that doesn’t mean that the search engines find and index it the moment you hit publish. There is an indexing process and it might be a few weeks or even a few months until the search engines get around to reindexing your site and finding your new/updated content. This is why many website owners that were hit by one of the Panda updates didn’t recover immediately even after they fixed their sites with appropriate onsite optimization.

Image

Not all SEO was created equal, and some elements of onsite optimization may have a bigger effect on your website sooner than others. For instance, a well trusted e-commerce site that was trying to get more visitors on Cyber Monday could target long-tail keywords and would probably see a slight uptick in visitors for those keywords. Since the site has a good trust factor with the search engines, those small changes had a big impact. If it were a brand new e-commerce website, chances are none of their onsite optimization would make a substantial difference.

There are a lot of factors affecting how well your site ranks in the search engines that are out of your control. In addition to how old and trusted your site is, you also have to consider the level of competition you’re up against. If you compete in a highly competitive niche, good onsite optimization is just the first step in good SEO—chances are every one of your competitors has a well optimized site, so that’s not going to be the deciding factor in whose website performs the best. If you operate in a relatively small niche, good onsite optimization might catapult your website over the competition with minimal offsite SEO.

So how long until you see the positive effects of onsite optimization? I can’t really give you a set time frame. In my experience, it can take anywhere from 3 months to almost a year to really feel the effects kick in. That’s why it’s so important to keep at your SEO and not call it quits when you aren’t seeing immediate results! The wheels may be turning behind the scenes and if you pull the plug on your SEO campaign too soon you’ll never reap the benefits of onsite optimization.

  1. Top 10 SEO Tips

Image

SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) is becoming crucial to ensure that your website is easily found, so today we’ve provided ourTop 10 SEO Tips to help you get the best search results for your website.

When you are operating a business website, especially one with an online store, it is crucial that your site can be easily found. Just as bricks and mortar retail stores always try to get the best position with the highest pedestrian count, websites need to rank well in search engines to be successful.

This is where SEO (search engine optimisation) comes into the picture. Why is it so important? Well, SEO is one of the keys to the success of your online business.

What is SEO? Wikipedia defines it as:

“Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the visibility of a website or a web page in search engines via the “natural” or un-paid (“organic” or “algorithmic”) search results”

Website ranking is determined by many factors, the relevance of the keyword or search terms to what the searcher is seeking, the popularity of the search term amongst the people who actually search, as well as technical elements such use of keywords/phrases in page titles, use of all keywrods and phrases within the body text etc. By understanding search terms and developing appropriate SEO strategies, your website can gradually improve its search engine rankings.

The following Top 10 SEO tips are simple techniques that you can use to start improving the search engine ranking of your website.

Top 10 SEO Tips

1. Encourage respected, industry-related websites to link to your web pages

This is the most important factor in optimising your site. Inbound links from other websites and blogs help the search engines find you and understand what your web pages are about. A website is like a destination in a sprawling city, and links are the roads leading to it. The search engines also treat these links pointing to your web pages as ‘votes’, and the more ‘votes’ you have from good quality and relevant websites, the better.

2. Satisfy the search engines’ appetite for informative text

Customers are looking for information to help them choose a product or service. The search engines help them by finding web pages that provide useful and helpful information about that product or service. Search engines can’t ‘read’ images and animations, so they need informative text. Give the search engines plenty of reading material. This is their food.

The other benefit of providing lots of helpful information on your site is that website owners are more likely to link to your pages and the search engines will reward you for these inbound links.

3. Do some keyword research

Who is your target market? What words or phrases (keywords) would they use to search for your products and services on the Web? Do some research; you may be surprised by the results.

To be found on the Web and communicate with your customers, you need to speak their language and address their particular needs. It’s much easier to optimise web pages for keywords relating to a niche market’s needs (e.g., Australian women looking for shoes size 10 and over, as opposed to people across the globe looking for general footwear).

Yahoo’s Overture Keyword Assistant

4. Make sure each web page has a unique title and unique content

Each of your web pages should have unique content and the keywords and title you choose for each page should reflect this. Think of each page as having a different emphasis. It’s important to have a different title for every web page. Need help with page titles and how to edit them?

Search engines rank web pages, not websites, so each page can only be optimised for a handful of keywords and you can’t optimise every page for the same set of keywords. If you try to fill a single page with all of the keywords related to your business, no single keyword will stand out to the search engines and they will not consider the page to be a good match for any specific search query.

5. Use your keywords in your web pages

Incorporate your keywords — in context and in moderation — into the text, headings, links, image titles and descriptions, description meta tags and keyword meta tags of your web pages.

6. Speak your target market’s language

Help your customers find your website by clearly explaining what products and services you offer and the regions you service. Speak your customers’ language and you will also help the search engines understand what you offer. Search engines are not good at ‘reading between the lines’ and you can help them by being specific in your choice of words.

Imagine that an Australian is searching the web for science fiction and fantasy books to buy. He types ‘science fiction books’ into Google. He also tries ‘sci fi books’ and ‘new sci fi‘. Google looks for Australian web pages that best match his queries.

Google will choose Example 1 (which clearly offers ‘science fiction books’,  ‘sci fi‘, ‘new in science fiction’ in ‘Australia’) over Example 2 (which offers ‘stock’, ‘titles’ and ‘new releases’). To a search engine, ‘titles’ could refer to DVDs, magazines or books — it’s not absolutely clear that Planet 9 sells books and more specifically, science fiction and fantasy books. Although a customer might infer that ‘Planet 9’ probably has something to do with sci fi, a search engine won’t necessarily make the connection.

Example 1

Science Fiction and Fantasy Books at Great Prices
Select from our wide range of sci fi and fantasy books. Our affordable shipping rates mean you can take advantage of our competitive prices, wherever you are in Australia.

Example 2

Lots of Stock; Great Prices at Planet 9
Planet 9 has a wide range of titles at competitive prices. No matter where you are, you can get a great deal, thanks to our low shipping fees.

New Releases
Just out! The latest …

7. Update the text content of your website

The search engines are trying to deliver the best, most up-to-date information to people searching the Web, so they favour sites that are updated often with good quality text content.

8. Study your site’s statistics

Use your SiteSuite website statistics to learn which sites are driving traffic to yours and which pages within your website are the most popular.

Have you paid to have your site listed in a particular directory? Check your website statistics to confirm if that directory is driving traffic to your site.

9. Add interactive features to your website

Give your customers the opportunity to contribute comments, ask questions, submit product reviews, vote in a poll, or forward links and images to friends. These features encourage visitors to return and tell others about your site. Increasing traffic to your site can in turn attract the attention of the search engines. Interactive features such as forums and blogs have the added bonus of encouraging visitors to generate more text content for your website — the very thing search engines are looking for.

10. Look at your competitors’ site content

Which web page appears first in the search result for your chosen keywords? Watch the search results over several weeks to see which pages perform well consistently. How are your competitors using those keywords on their web pages? How is their text information structured? How much information do they offer? Do you offer a product or service that your competitors don’t, or do you service an area they don’t cover? Make sure the distinction is clear to your customers and the search engines.

Given the importance of ensuring your website is easily found in Google and other search engines, we’ll continue to provide updates to our Top 10 SEO Tips and other SEO advice, as well as occasional guest blogs by SEO professionals. But whether you follow our top 10 SEO tips or not, you simply can’t ignore your website’s ranking, your business might depend on it.

A Web Designer’s SEO Checklist (Including Portable Formats)
s you might have noticed from our previous articles; there are many factors which need to be influenced to optimize a website for search engines. After a while you might not see the woods for the trees. To help you bring some order to this chaos, we’ve compiled an SEO checklist.

To make your task even easier, we’ve created a number of versions of this checklist, including an HTML version, Markdown, PDF and Evernote. Download them all from the Tuts+ GitHub account.

Image

This checklist has been divided into three parts: site-wide SEO, on-page SEO and off-site SEO. We often reference previously published articles; you’ll find a “Read more..” link where that’s the case.

Site-wide SEO

Site-wide SEO techniques can influence the entire website.

Accessibility

  • Page access: If a search engine can’t reach a page, it’s impossible to have it indexed. Make sure that the robots.txt file or robots meta tag isn’t accidentally blocking important pages. Read more..
  • Inappropriate pages: On the other hand: some pages should not be indexed, for example incomplete pages or confidential pages. Block them via the robots.txt file or robots meta tag. Read more..
  • Pagination: help search engines handle pagination by implementing the rel=”next” andrel=”prev tag. Read more..
  • Redirects: use 301-redirects instead of 302. 301-redirects pass more PageRank. Read more..
  • 404 errors: try to reduce the amount of 404 errors to a minimum.
  • Site speed: site speed has become a ranking factor. Faster is better. Use Google Page Speed to check the loading time of your pages.
  • Mobile accessibility: is your site accessible for mobile devices? Google recommends a responsive design. Read more..
  • Duplicate content: check for duplicate content in Google Webmaster tools, via the site: search command or via site crawling software. Duplicate content issues can be solved via a 301-redirect, therel=”canonical” tag, meta robots tag, URL rewriting or Google Webmaster Tools.

URL Structure

  • www or non-www: Choose one and make sure the internal and inbound links use the same format. Use Google Webmaster Tools to set the preferred version. Automatic URL rewriting is also possible.Read more..
  • Domain extension: Local businesses might want to consider choosing a country-specific domain extension for better ranking.
  • Subdomain or subfolder: Subdomains are often seen by Google as separate domains, so it’s best to use subfolders. If you have several, non-related products you can still opt for a subdomain though
  • Descriptive URLs: use a descriptive page name instead of a random number of words and letters. The same goes for subfolders...
  • Hyphens: use hyphens to split words in a URL.
  • URL parameters: you can help Google handle URL parameters via Google Webmaster tools.
  • Image

Sitemaps

  • HTML sitemap: a HTML sitemap is not only useful for visitors, but also for search engines. It helps them understand your site architecture.
  • XML sitemap: this sitemap is only visible for search engines. XML sitemaps allow you to add metadata which can be used to provide additional information about the content of each page. An XML sitemap can contain a maximum of 50,000 links. .
  • Image sitemap: The Image Sitemap can help your images show up in Google Image Search results and get you some extra visitors.
  • Video sitemap: a video sitemap can help with the creation of rich snippets for your

On-page SEO

On-page SEO techniques optimize a single page for search engines.

Keyword

  • Single keyword per page: Make sure every page targets a single keyword.
  • Keyword research: ranking for the correct keywords is very important. Do some research and see which keyword has the highest traffic potential and the least amount of competition. Balance these two factors.
  • Keyword in URL: use the keyword in the URL (page name)
  • Keyword in title: use the keyword in the title of the page, preferably in the beginning. This is an important indicator for search engines to categorise a
  • Keyword in headings: use the keyword in one or more headings (h1, h2, h3…). The h1 tag should only be used once on a page and should be used for the title.
  • Keyword in content: it’s impossible to write about a topic without using the keyword. Use it, including variations and synonyms, throughout the text. Try to use it in the first paragraph too.

Content

  • Title: max. 70 characters long
  • Unique value: does your content provide unique value to the visitor? Great content attracts links naturally.
  • Content type: choosing a different content type, e.g. infographic, comic, quiz… can help you attract links.
  • Crawlability: Search engines have difficulties crawling certain content types, for example images or flash content. A combination of HTML, CSS and webfonts can be used to solve certain crawlability problems.
  • Language targeting: inform search engines about a translated page by using therel=”alternate” hreflang=”x” annotation.
  • Freshness: search engines like new content. Regularly posting or updating pages is recommended.
  • Content length: content length is correlated with rankings. Longer articles usually score better. Try to aim for at least 300 words

Images

  • File name: choose a descriptive file name instead of random words and numbers.
  • Alt-tag: don’t forget to add an alt-tag with a short description of the image.
  • Size: keep your images as small as possible to improve page load times.

Display in SERPs

  • Meta description: change the description of a page in the SERPs by adding a meta-description tag. A good description convinces surfers to click on the link. Don’t forget to use keywords because they appear in bold.
  • Structured data: add structured data to your page that can be used to generate rich snippets. Rich snippets can vastly improve the CTR of your pages. Structured data can be added via microdata, RFDa or microformats.
  • Authorship information: add authorship information to your pages. AuthorRank is a relatively new ranking factor.

Social Snippets

  • Thumbnail: choose an eye-catching thumbnail that’s at least 200 x 200 pixels.
  • Title: the title acts as an anchor text for your social snippet.
  • URL: the URL of the underlying page. Don’t forget to tag your URL using Google’s URL builder for additional information in Google Analytics.
  • Description: a short description of the content. You can use the meta-description for this.
  • Twitter: Twitter Cards use the Open Graph tags, supplemented with several Twitter-specific tags.

Local Search

  • Local optimization: optimize your page as you would do for any other keyword. Use the location (for example Palo Alto) in the page title, URL and content.
  • Structured data: location information can also be added via structured data.
  • Multiple locations: if you have a chain of businesses, create a unique page with a separate URL for each location.
  • Google+: create a Google+ Local page for your business.
  • Local listing: get links from local listings (YellowPages, Foursquare, Yelp…) to improve your visibility for local search queries.

Off-site SEO

SEO tactics that are beyond our website.

Image
  • Inbound links: check the number of inbound links.
  • Authority: links from sites with a high domain authority are more valuable
  • Anchor text: the anchor text is the text that is used to link to your site. Keywords in an anchor text are very useful, but don’t overdo this. Make sure your link profile looks natural.
  • Diversity: try to gain links from multiple, relevant domains instead of only a handful of sites. .
  • Nofollow: inbound links that use the rel=”nofollow” tag pass no PageRank
  • Bad links: links from spammy, suspicious websites can hurt your rankings. Contact the webmaster to remove them or use the Disavow Tool.

5 Killer SEO Tips to Get Backlinks

Image

Posted by: ARIF ANJUM, Lahore pakistan

Anyone who pays attention to SEO techniques knows that getting high quality, “do follow,” and diverse backlinks is the key to search engine optimization. The challenge, of course, is where to find places to get powerful backlinks.

Most people build their link building strategies around blog and forum postings. This makes sense and is certainly part of our plans as well. However, it stands to reason that Google also knows that most marketers who are using SEO tactics to rank their sites are doing this, and it makes sense that they will be looking for a much more diverse backlink pattern to award the highest rankings to.

With that in mind, I’m going to share the top 5 non-forum/blog backlink sources that we teach in Commission Blueprint 2.0.

1. Squidoo Lists

Squidoo.com is a great place to get links back to your site. Type the following into a Google search:

“add+to+this+list”+site:squidoo.com

You will be presented with a huge list of Squidoo lenses where you can add your site, with custom anchor text. Many of these have very high PageRank as well!

For extra credit, append +”keyword phrase” onto the end of this query, and you can target your links for relevance. For example, if you were trying to rank a fitness site you could type:

“add+to+this+list”+”fitness”+site:squidoo.com

2. Web 2.0 Profiles

Many Web 2.0 sites that allow you to create profiles and interact with others provide high PageRank, “do follow” links to the website listed in your profile. Some examples includehttp://www.linkedin.com, www.flickr.com, www.twibs.com, and http://www.zoominfo.com.

When creating profiles on these sites (which you could do for every niche you’re in) you’re able to list your website, which becomes a high quality backlink to your site.

3. Article Marketing for Links

Most marketers are familiar with writing articles to get traffic, but we write most of our articles for backlinks. If you’ve put a link to your site within the article (and let’s certainly hope you’re doing that!), every article that gets posted becomes a backlink (or even 2 or 3). The more articles that get posted, the more links you can build.

To get started, you simply have to write the article and submit it to a few article directories. I recommend: hree places (submit to Ezinearticles first, though, as they are the strictest with regard to unique content), and if you are accepted by all three and have 2 links in each article, your article will result in 6 high quality backlinks!http://www.olxonline.com, http://www.facebook.com/SEOEXPERTARIFANJUMThere is absolutely no problem or penalty with submitting the same article to all three places (submit to Ezinearticles first, though, as they are the strictest with regard to unique content), and if you are accepted by all three and have 2 links in each article, your article will result in 6 high quality backlinks!

4. Relevant Lists and Resource Directories

There are many websites that function as a resource for people interested in a particular topic. For example, one site may maintain a list of top weight loss sites to visit. A backlink from pages like these can provide high quality, highly relevant backlinks. The relevance of backlinks is being talked about much more by Google lately, and it is assumed that relevance will play a larger role in site ranking in the near future.

The trick is to find these sites quickly and efficiently. We’ve found the following Google search queries to work very well:

“Keyword phrase” + “add url”

“Keyword phrase” + “add site”

“Keyword phrase” +  “add website”

For example, if you’re looking to build backlinks to a fitness-related site, you can search for:

fitness” + “add url”

Google will return a huge list of sites that will allow you to add your web site, creating a backlink to your site.

One thing to watch out for is that many of the sites you’ll come across will ask for a reciprocal link (i.e., we’ll link to you if you link to us). These should be avoided. It’s worth the effort to sift through these sites to find ones where you can add your link without having to place a reciprocal link on your site, because these links are less valuable for SEO purposes.

Make sure to keep a list or database of all of these great link building sites/resources that you find, so you don’t have to search for them again the next time!

5. Easy EDU Links

I’ve saved my favorite and most unique tip for last. It’s commonly accepted knowledge that .EDU and .GOV backlinks are valued very highly when Google decides on your search rank position. Some people also know the “trick” to finding blogs and forums on .EDU domains, where they can leave useful comments that link back to their sites. If you don’t, here’s a great Google query to find .EDU blogs:

site:.edu inurl:blog “post a comment” -”you must be logged in”

We’re after something more valuable, though. How about a whole page on an .EDU domain where you can put an article or a whole blog post, as opposed to just a comment? All you need is a willing college student!

At many schools, college students are given web space they can use for anything they like. Of course, this web space is hosted on the .EDU domain. All we need to do is to get this college student to allow us to post our material if they like it. But how do you go about finding these students?

If you really think about it, you can’t possibly be many degrees of separation away from knowing someone who’s in college right now. Think about your circle of friends and family, and branch out from there. For example, even though I’m “older” (I have teenage children… sigh), I still have 3 cousins that are attending college right now. If I expand my reach further, friends of my parents have children in college. I’m also getting to the age where my friends are starting to have kids in college. In short, I can’t throw a rock into my personal network without hitting a college student!

All you have to do is approach these students in your network and ask for their help, or give them something in exchange, for the privilege of putting some content on their site. It’s as simple as that.

I hope these tips help you improve your search engine rankings and make you a more successful Internet Marketer!
