Top 7 Must-Have Free SEO Tools for Beginners

Keywords: Analytics, Google, SEO, AdWords Keyword Tool, PageRank Status

You can never see too many lists of free tools if you’re just starting out in SEO. Tools are crucial to practicing SEO and grasping a better understanding of how the industry works, but many of them are very expensive. As a beginner, it is not necessary to start by buying a tool that costs a lot of money. Once you know what you’re looking for and know what you’re doing, then you can move on to something advanced. For now, the free SEO tools out there will absolutely get the job done. In fact, many are surprised at just how many quality tools SEO professionals give out for free. Below are some of the top choices for beginners:

  1. Google Analytics. A great tool to get you started. Even the most advanced professional who make SEO a full-time job are using Google Analytics. It might be confusing at first, but it will help any beginner get a sense of what is measured (website traffic, conversions, audience, etc.) and therefore what is important.
  2. AdWords Keyword Tool. Completing keyword research is an incredibly important aspect of SEO (you have to know what and where to optimize, after all). This tool will show you the competition, global monthly searches, and local monthly searches for every keyword you try. Even the most advanced SEO professionals turn to this tool for their research.
  3. Open Site Explorer. This tool will help you find link opportunities through competitor backlink research. The tool comes from SEOmoz and helps you determine if you can earn the same links that your competitors have earned (not to mention do a little bit of snooping).
  4. SEO by Yoast. This is my favorite SEO plugin to install on a website. It helps walk you through the different steps of SEO to make sure that you’re optimizing each and every webpage. This works best when you’re focusing on optimizing the content on your website.
  5. PageRank Status. You can download a free browser extension to help you see the PageRank of every webpage you visit. This will help beginners get a sense of where the website ranks on Google (it doesn’t always mean that one website is better quality than another, but it does mean it is more established). This is a great way to find authoritative link building opportunities. You can see SEO stats, site info, page info and page speed all by just clicking on the plugin.
  6. Google Webmaster Tools. Every SEO professional has a Google Webmaster Tools account, so the sooner beginners get on board, the better. The tool allows you to monitor the indexing of your website, keyword clicks, sitemaps, and lists of links (external as well as internal) to you site.
  7. Bing Webmaster Tools. You can’t forget that Bing is still the number three search engine out there, so optimizing for it is important even if you’re a beginner. Bing has a few different features than Google Webmaster Tools, but for the most part it serves the same purpose—giving you insight as to the number of clicks, links, indexing, etc.

I highly recommend clicking on the links to learn more about the free tools and what they can offer. The above just gives a quick overview, but each individual tool is chock-full of information to learn. If there is a free tool that has helped you learn SEO in past, let us know.

Our review of backlink analysis software tools and web services

Link analysis has always been an integral part to search marketing efforts. As with all marketing, you need to benchmark where you are and what your competitors are doing in order to put the right work in place and also to track performance. Within the last two years this process has become easier with a wider range of tools now available to aid you.

Search specialists will definitely know all of these and many more, but this list is aimed more at client-side marketers who want to benchmark their link quality against competitors, review SEO agency performance and spot opportunities for partnering with other sites, for example blogger outreach.

July 2012 updates: Added a sixth tool – Bing Webmaster Tools and the SEOGadjet analysis.

Comparison of data quality of backlink analysis tools

Added references to this excellent review of data quality from backlink analysis tools from Richard Baxter at SEOGadget. Don’t purchase a subscription or use any of these tools until you’ve read this!

Here is a summary using the most important chart of many – see the full analysis. Data is presented for the http://www.seogadget.co.uk site.

Size of link database

Majestic is often lauded for the size of its database. This chart shows a clear difference between these services. Another report on Live links shows a similar pattern:

So which is the best tool? While the chart above may suggest Majestic the detailed analysis shows that you need a combination. Richard Baxter concludes:

“The bottom line is this – I would consolidate and de-dupe the data from all 3 to get the most complete picture of my backlinks. While Majestic and Google Webmaster Tools have the ”most” data, they’re not complete. Open Site Explorer is about on par with Majestic Fresh (it’s slightly better in this case) but the data is different.

They all have differing crawl depths, index compositions, user interfaces and additional features. I can’t see how any serious link analysis would omit data from any of these sources. On a product development note, I really wish Google Webmaster Tools would make their link data available via the API.”

This is what we find when we speak to agencies and clients – most use both  Majestic and SEOmoz.

Overview of backlink analysis tools

Increasingly, there is overlap with monitoring online PR tools which record mentions across the web  – for these see our compilation of 36 reputation management services.

We think Majestic SEO is particularly useful for top-level benchmarking. The paid service gives more detail on the links, but the free backlink history analysis report below compares competitor activity at the top level. Here we’re comparing our recently launched site with the established DaveChaffey.com. It shows linkbuilding is a long-term play rewarded by a sound content strategy! If you use this tool, we recommend the cumulative view and focusing on the unique referring domains as explained below. We did an interview with Dixon Jones of Majestic SEO a year ago which reviews how to choose a tool and linkbuilding process.

Link analysis should be done before any link building campaigns are started. You should understand:

  • How many links you have. When benchmarking it’s most useful to review individual sites(known as unique referring domains) linking to you rather than total links, since you may have many links from one site (a link repeated across the whole site)
  • The quality & related anchor text of the links (this could show some good wins in link reconfiguration)
  • How you compare to your competitors in terms of number, quality & anchor text
  • You should also have a good understanding of any quality links your competitors have and you don’t (Usually creates an obvious starting point)

Below we have recommend 6 tools available to you for competitive link analysis work. All allow you to review your own links and competitor links. We haven’t included Google Webmaster Tools because it only provides link information for your own site and isn’t totally comprehensive. If you do use it, we recommend the Yoast Firefox plugin which overlays PageRank information. We also haven’t included the Yahoo! Site Explorer which is an established tool, but likely to disappear with the Microsoft alliance. It’s also been superseded by the Open Site Explorer which gives additional info on anchor text and nofollowed links (where link equity isn’t passed from one site to another, for example in a blog comment or social network link).

Overview: We want to debunk the use of link: – it may seem an obvious place to start and is still recommended, but some we speak to still think this gives a comprehensive listing, but rather it is a sample because Google has decided to display. We’ve found the sample has bigger , although Smart Insights is new in 2010, we have already amassed a fair few links – see :  In this example we use -site  to remove links from our own site.

Pros:

  • Free
  • Quick
  • Simple

Cons:

  • Only shows a tiny segment of links
  • Requires plugins to export & pull together
  • Doesn’t provide link quality data (Page Rank for example)
Google Webmaster Tools gives a much better analysis as the SEOGadget research shows, but of course it’s only available for your own data.

2. Open Site Explorer (SEOmoz)

Overview: With the demise of Yahoo Site Explorer imminent the rise of this new in 2010 tool is hardly surprising. Giving access to very useful data with just a free login this tool is a great place to start with link analysis (total number of links limited). Powered by SEOmoz this tool should be in all hands-on online marketers favourites.

Pros:

  • Free (though paid options available for more links and  functionality)
  • Quick
  • Simple
  • Allows comparisons to other sites through domain authority benchmar.
  • Easy to use scoring tools which make comparisons & benchmarking simple
  • Anchor Text analysis available
  • Export to excel functionality built in
  • Ability to drill down into links to specific pages

Cons:

  • Analysis beyond first 1,000 links requires payment
  • Cannot track links over time vs competitors to track your progress

3. Majestic SEO

Overview: Quite a well known tool in SEO, Majestic SEO gives incredibly detailed analysis on links. It prides its self on the size of its index and the its ability to turn this index into useful reports.

Pros:

  • Free (though paid options available for more functionality)
  • Quick
  • Allows comparisons to other sites
  • Allows you to trend external links over time
  • Anchor Text analysis available
  • Export to excel functionality built in
  • Ability to drill down into links to specific pages
  • Allows both a back link & domain link counts
  • Separates EDU & GOV links to allow easy analysis on quality links

Cons:

  • Not a sophisticated interface, requires practice
  • Analysis beyond first 1,000 links requires payment / subscription

4. Link Diagnosis

http://www.facebook.com/pages/WST-ARIF-ANJUM/218692561609241

Overview: While an easier to use interface linkdiagnosis.com makes it frustratingly difficult to get started as it is locked down to Firefox and you have to install a plugin just to view reports.

Pros:

  • Free (though paid options available for more functionality)
  • Quick
  • Anchor Text analysis available
  • Visibility on nofollow links
  • Export to excel functionality built in
  • Ability to drill down into links to specific pages

Cons:

  • Slow
  • Only works in FireFox
  • You have to download a plugin to see reports

5. Advanced Link Manager

Site address: https://plus.google.com/100811438221838833656

Overview: A tool created by the same team behind Advanced Web Ranking which is a popular keyword rank tracking tool this software which is available for PC & Mac is a great addition to their portfolio. It does however do a lot more than link analysis, it often promotes it ability to “automate” link building, it can be configured to source websites, get their contact details & send automatic link requests to websites. Not something I would recommend.

Pros:

  • Ability to track link-building progress over time
  • Quick
  • Anchor Text analysis available
  • Ability to create custom reports & email / download
  • Ability to drill down into links to specific pages
  • Can be configure to run at certain intervals to keep everything up-to-date automatically

Cons:

  • Cheapest version = $99
  • Software only – Cannot be accessed by web browsers
  • Tries to do too much

6. NEW (July 2012) : Bing Webmaster Tools Link Explorer

Site address: www.olxonline.com

Yahoo Site Explorer has recently been reborn within Bing webmaster tools.

You may also be interested in this more detailed review on Bing Webmaster Tools.

With many of the same features as its predecessor Bing Link Explorer allows you to view:

  • View trend reports going back 6months
  • Analyse links into specific pages of the website
  • View anchor text relating to the inbound links
  • Export all data into Excel to manipulate / analyse further
Pros:
  • Free
  • Quick & easy to use
  • Up-to-date
  • Ability to analyse by page
  • Ability to export & use the data in excel

Cons:

  • Only includes your link data other tools required for competitor analysis which measure things differently

Using one of the tools above to help with your link analysis is definitely going to save you a lot of time. Remember when starting this work be clear what you want out of it, have objectives set and where possible benchmark your current performance so you can track your progress.

If you know of any other tools that we should have included above please let us know and we will take a look.

There is no real way to define “Advanced SEO”.  It doesn’t particularly have a definition in and of itself, however the concept behind it is what defines it.  What makes it advanced is that some of the procedures for implementation are typically a bit more detailed than other, more basic concepts, and can require some special tools and resources.  Some measures of advanced search engine optimization are more like strategies than short-term tactics.

Keep in mind that just because a certain technique is difficult to implement doesn’t mean it’s advanced.  It might just be tedious.  Tediousness isn’t really a factor in deciding on what’s advanced.  If it were, marriage would be considered an advanced partnership.

Pity there is no sign on bonus.

There are far too many tactics to list all at once, just like basic SEO.  We’ll kick off with a look at Social Media Outreach.

When you consider the viral nature of social media in the last 5 years, it’s a wonder at all how it took so long for mainstream marketing to latch on like a rabid monkey to the concept.  Consider Twitter.  It’s a noun, a verb, a strategy, a tool, a resource, a network.  It is a means of funneling traffic to and from anywhere on the web, and the potential for unending “retweets” is staggering.  Social Media Outreach goes beyond simple link sharing though.

Consider the implications of doing nothing with your content.  You will forever sit back, with reactive firehouse like management of building your reputation.  When you see things stagger and take a downturn, you may try to do something but otherwise you sit content.  That’s no way to manage anything, especially not your business.  You need to take a proactive approach to building your online reputation.

Take the initiative to create communities both in and outside of your own website(s).  Need an example?  Look at the Dell Corporation and “Idea Storm”.  They created an entire community designed around listening to the consumer.  Not only are they directly marketing themselves in every, single post but they are putting the emotion, thought and attitude into the customer that “hey…  wow HEY my opinion counts!”.  Every business owner wants that rapport with his or her customers. You should as well.

It is no secret that a blog can drive business.  It can directly affect search engine listing and rank, they generate interest in your product and service, they can provide far more information through multiple posts than you can by over-stuffing your website pages, and the list goes on.  Most importantly though, a blog helps build your brand and brand loyalty.  Visitors come for the information, and they stay to shop.  If the info is good, and they trust you, you earn a customer.  SEO does not end once you have put up your own blog.  Off-site blogger relations play a key role in successful marketing and outreach.

Image

There are thousands upon thousands of professional bloggers on the web.  Pitching to any number of reputable bloggers is a great way to generate offsite content that links to you.  You are engaging online communities (the key concept in social media outreach) while proactively link building.

What do you pitch?  A press release is a great start; just do not send the whole thing.  Personalize your contact and send a link.  Schwag is a great persuader as well.  If you have a product, part with a bit of your inventory and distribute it to some professional bloggers that cover y similar and relevant topics.  While they may not run with it every time, a bit of free schwag is enough to get anyone off their feet for a review.

Spreading a viral meme can be extremely difficult.  You are essentially chucking a ball into a minefield and hoping to trigger a chain reaction that sets off a whole train of explosions.  More often than not, the ball lands in the sand.  You will have less control over something going viral than other SEO marketing strategies but the end result is explosive.  It is a good day when your social media outreach plan works so well your visitors reach back and grab you up for a good, long crowd-surf across the net

I would not always recommend it, but a great tactic for turning eyes on you is to pull a Calacanis.  Grab the biggest spoon you can muster and stir the pot relevant to your market.  Generating controversy in any area will gain attention from both adversaries and supporters.  To top it all off, our human nature almost requires us to drag other people into our irritation or rallies – both sides will more than likely link to you.

Lastly, social media networks are swallowing the world.  People are engaging their accounts on mobile devices more than ever, and it’s often because of applications such as those that exist on Facebook.  You can use media apps to create relevant content geared toward your business.  Create funny, engaging quizzes, implement contests, sell products, etc.  There is massive power behind apps and widgets.

Users can repost them on any site, and most CMS come with widget management tools.  If you question the power of widgets, consider the mp3 widget launched by Amazon.com several years ago – it allowed you to listen as well as buy the tracks you liked.  The kickback did not just come from the individual owner of the widget.  Every site visitor that had access to the widget could listen and make purchases.

Portable jukebox and retail outlet – zero franchise fees.

Social Media Outreach is just that, an outreach.  It requires proactive interaction with networks in relevant groups.  It is one of many tactics that require great time and attention – prove to your visitors and customers that you are interested in them, just as much as they are interested in you.

Advanced SEO Techniques For 2012

Image

Developing a website may seem a daunting task, but developing a following or a mass of potential leads is even more trying. It takes time, it takes dedication, and, assuming that you are heading down the SEO route, it takes a strong understanding of how search engines work and what they look for.

Utilise advanced SEO techniques and you could develop a popular and highly profitable online business but if you get it wrong, well, at least you’ll still have a good looking design to look at.

Below are some of the more advanced SEO techniques that will come to the fore in 2012:

  • Rich Media – Statistics and research continue to show that the more successful blogs and websites are those that share a good range of rich media sources with users. Text alone can become boring quickly, whereas sharing a relevant photo or video clip can help excite, enthral, educate, and convert your visitors. Make sure the content is relevant and good quality and you could even seed a viral campaign.
  • User Generated Content – As well as creating your own high quality and unique content, you can also rely on your readers and visitors to assist. Invite your readers to write reviews, share their experiences, and even post their product related photos on your site. Your website visitors will become brand ambassadors as well as satisfied customers.
  • Remove Duplicate Content – Following the furore surrounding the Panda update and subsequent data refreshes, it has become even more evident that Google dislikes duplicate content. Remove scraped content, add 301 redirects, and implement canonical linking SEO techniques in order to ensure that your content is deemed high quality and unique by the search engines. Your visitors will appreciate it, too.
  • Leverage Social Media – 2011 was the year of social media, with the introduction of Google+ and the rise of websites like Pinterest. Expect more of the same in 2012 along with new features being added to Bing following their partnership with Facebook, and greater onus placed on Google+ results. Google is serious about social search and so should you be if you want to enjoy search engine success.
  • Google+ – Google+ and Google Plus Your World will change the way that search engine results appear. Sites and pages that have a good following on the search engine’s new social networking enterprise are likely to enjoy improved search results. Currently, the changes caused by your Google+ profile may be restricted to your circles of friends but you can expect this to be rolled out across Google’s extensive and expansive search engine portfolio.
  • Watch The Fold – Another change to Google’s algorithms this year was greater concentration on websites that are too ad heavy above the fold of the page. You can still use advertisements and they can still appear above the fold but don’t get carried away. Ensure that you have genuinely useful information placed up here because this is where the search engine spiders and your human visitors will pay the most attention.
  • Mobile – Mobile Internet usage is still on the increase as more and more people now access websites and online services using a variety of different devices. We are no longer tethered to the desk or tied to a laptop with numerous tablet PCs, smartphones, and even mp3 players and media players affording us the opportunity to get online. If you don’t already, then optimise your website for use on the mobile web. Mobile usage is only going to increase further.
  • Diversify Your SEO – There is no single SEO technique that will propel your website to the top of the rankings and this will become more evident throughout 2012. Some traditional optimisation techniques will remain effective but only if they are combined with newer techniques. Social and rich media, the mobile web, page speed optimisation, and current trends will play a considerably larger part in the world of optimisation in 2012.
  • Keep Your Ear To The Ground – Last year was a baffling year for many SEOs. Mergers between major players led to new opportunities while huge algorithmic changes from some of the biggest search engines meant that even the well prepared endured one or two surprises. 2012 looks set to offer much of the same. Voice search will gain some prominence, social networks will chop and change, and numerous other SEO techniques will either fade away or come to the fore. The best SEO is the one that keeps their ear to the ground and reacts quickly to change.

There are certain SEO techniques that will remain tried and tested in 2012. Use ethical link building strategies to develop a good number of high quality links to your site and ensure that your pages are optimised for the benefit of web users as well as search engine spiders. This way you’ll not only enjoy improved search rankings and more visitors to your web pages but you’ll also witness greater conversion rates too; the perfect formula for online success.

Advanced Small Business SEO and Link Building Tips (With Examples)

Note: this is a how-to SEO article intended for small business owners–those of you who sell a physical product or perform a service (versus being a web-only company) and spend most of your time growing your business rather than focusing on SEO or link building. However, you’re already web-savvy and know the gist of SEO and take care of it yourself, but you’re in search of some up-to-date SEO link building tips and tricks for 2012 and 2013 (stuff that won’t get you banned or result in an “unnatural links” notice) but are effective and will increase your site’s search engine rankings and help you get an edge on your competitors. You already know backlinks are vitally important for SEO success and now is the time to address them.

Disclaimer: Doing link building is not a substitute for a complete SEO audit or a web marketing strategy, but I’ve found that most small business websites can see tremendous growth simply by doing some quick (and clever) link building that I will share with you below.

First, find where there should be links to your website but aren’t… Get links placed there.

Seriously. Ask/call/email the person in charge of the websites you’d think should be linking to you but for whatever reason aren’t, and see if you can get links placed on here. Your business doesn’t operate in a vacuum and neither should your website! This is the most important and easiest part of link building and I bet I can help you think of a dozen websites right now that you can very easily get some links from! Some ideas:

  • Your suppliers/vendors- Go check their sites and see if they have a consumer resource section or a retail locations page where they list the places their products are available for sale. These are a great place for links. For instance, this page on popular sports car wheel manufacturer’s website would be a vital one to be included on if you were a retailerSomething a little less common but equally valid would be a medical device manufacturer’s list of authorized practitioners if you were a doctor.
  • Your customers- If you’re B2B, great. Your customers all have websites and there’s probably a place on their site where they would be happy to give you a link. (If there isn’t, the simple fact that you reminded them might compel them to create a page or section on their site specifically for external links where of course you will be included on… I’ve seen it happen many times). Here’s an example of what you could look for (see right hand column for “official suppliers”. There’s some small brands listed there besides the large ones.)
  • Your partners, friends and acquaintances. Think of everyone you know who might have a website and look them up. If they have one, great! If their site is somehow relevant to yours (they’re located in the same city/county as you, they’re in a related field. etc.) or even if they’re not (say for instance they’re a real estate agent with a “favorite local businesses” page etc.), they would usually happily link to your site! I have a friend in New York City who runs a small website that caters to job hunters in his area. I talk to him occasionally, and it wouldn’t be a stretch to ask for a link on his website’s partners page  if I owned a business that either operated in the New York metro area or was in some way/shape/form related to careers/job searching (which I don’t by the way). Don’t be a jerk about it of course, but just ask nicely. Remember these people know you and probably would have linked to you anyway if they hadn’t forgotten or you didn’t remind them :)
  • Niche-specific directories and curated lists relevant to your industry. Yes, I said the “D” word and yes I want you to get links on pages with a bunch of other links. Run fast from anything that mentions “free SEO directory” or anything fishy like that, but if there’s local and relevant resources that your competitors are listed on, go ahead and sign up too. Links like these aren’t bad and are pretty easy to get. Here’s a page I’d want a link on if I was, say, a dentist in Riverside County Aim for up to a dozen or so of these links, but don’t go overboard.

A good way to find these types of pages is to just Google your industry keywords and throw “list or “directory” or “resources” and your city, county or state onto the search bar and see what you find… For example I just came up with this random search since I saw my mom oil painting last week: “list of art supplies los angeles county”. Search for that and you’ll find this gem on the first page of the bet whoever runs this site would gladly list my business in their right hand column if I happened to own a fine art supplies store or even a picture framing business in LA county. Try to find legitimate websites like this to get links from and you’ll be golden.

Also, feel free to be creative and random with your searches too, even if they’re not exactly relevant! For example, Googling “hipster art supply la county” brings up a totally different set of results, and more importantly this Huffington Post article  right on the first page, which would be amazing to get mentioned on. To try my luck, I’d probably use the “contribute to this story” option and send a tip to the editor. If that doesn’t work, I would at least leave a comment on the article introducing my art supply business and linking to my site since I’m sure many in-market visitors land on there. I may even include my address and phone number in the comment in case someone on a mobile device with a limited browser stumbles on the article. (Note: this is a far cry from being a “spammy comment” that you may have been warned of. Comments like this are fine and provide value.)

Go ahead and place some reciprocal links; yes you are allowed to!

Contrary to popular SEO belief, reciprocal links aren’t all bad! If you contacted some people and asked for a link and they requested that you link back to them as well, don’t be scared. Feel free to honor their request–that’s how the web works!

Rankings in Google are like a popularity contest: if you have a lot of links and some of those are reciprocal, it’s fine, it just means that you’re well-connected and have a lot of friendships. The key is though you should be connected with only upstanding and legitimated sites!

Note: I hardly ever ask for any specific anchor text when requesting a link nor do I go out of my way to optimize the outgoing links on my site. Most people will have no idea what you’re talking about anyway if you ask for things like “anchor text” and “dofollow,” and there’s no reason to overcomplicate a simple link request. Links with the right anchor text of course can help your rankings, but not as much as before. Google is smarter now and too much anchor text sticks out like a sore thumb for users as well as for the search engines. Don’t lose sleep over it.

Find where your competitors who are outranking you are getting their links from. Get those links.

But how to? Believe it or not there’s some great tools out there that let you see exactly where any given website is getting their links from. There’s a free trial version for each of these tools available (usually you need to create an account first), but there’s great value in them even if you decide to purchase a paid version of one for a few months. Said tools are:

They’re pretty easy to figure out; slap in a relevant domain name or a URL into any of the tools and play around with the various filters and listing options and see all the types of links of your competitors have. Check out your own site as well!

Chances are whoever is outranking you in the search results is doing so because they have a stronger backlink profile than you, and using these tools is a way for you to easily get a competitive advantage over those who don’t know SEO, and eventually even those who you’re trying to outrank (you’ll get all the links they have, and then some more).

Go ahead and check out all the links and you will see a world of possibilities. These are the links that are helping your competitors rank, and guess what, they’ll help you rank as well. Of course only go after the links that seem legitimate, and stay away from anything that seems spammy or fishy. For example, stay away from junk links that appear on sites like this Notice how this site has no purpose other than to link to dozens of other websites? Avoid getting links on blog network sites like these at all costs. Also, avoid getting links on random sites that solicit you for a link exchange. Other than that, you should be safe. Trust your gut.

Find all broken links AND incorrect citations to your business and fix them.

There are probably dozens of links out there that are trying to point to your site right now but are simply old or broken, and there are also citations (mentions) out there with an incorrect/out-of-date phone number or address for your business. There may not be many, but the former are still links that you can get with minimal effort, and even if there aren’t any links to be had you should still make sure all text citations for your small business are accurate as this is vitally important for ranking well in Google Maps/local (more on that in a bit).

How to? If you’re a brick and mortar or if you have a street address associated with your business in some way, the easiest way is to simply use Google and search. For example, if was an acupuncturist and my website was http://www.olxonline.com the first thing I would do is search for was my company name and current address all as one keyword in Google, e.g.,

Quickly I can see that the first Google result is some kind of Mapquest detImage), and while the link to my site is fine the street address is incomplete and doesn’t include my office’s suite number. Not the best. To fix this I would visit the Mapquest support page and request the “I want to report an issue with a business listing or business location” option. Most sites have either this or the “claim business” option which will allow you to update your information yourself after you verify your site by email.

This should fix my issue at hand and furthermore provide the correct information for any other websites that makes use of Mapquest data to populate results for my business. I usually go through the first 10 pages of these Google results and try to fix anything incorrect like this that I come across. If I can’t update my business information myself I try to get in touch with somebody at the site regardless of how big or small it is and usually they’re pretty friendly and quick to fix things.

The second step is to run the same search as before in Google, but this time use any old addresses or phone numbers that you have been associated with in the past. You’ll find there’s probably a ton of sites out there with your old address or phone number still listed and you need to update those! For example, here’s a webpage I quickly found that has both an outdated address AND an outdated phone number (but correct website) for my previously mentioned imaginary acupuncture )Inconsistencies like this confuse Google’s algorithms and can be significantly hurting this company’s rankings in Maps/local where many online customers come from.

Scanning through the rest of the listings now. Everything seems fine, but wait! On the 3rd page of Google I see this  that includes my business name and address, but doesn’t include a link to my site, even though a competitor right above me has one! I should find how I can a get a link on here too. After a few clicks, I see a “list your practice” option in the header of the site and it looks like what I am after. It costs $20 a month to get one of these upgraded listing for my business, but I think it would be worth it in this case since I get a nice link and it’s on a very specific and high-authority website that may send me some qualified visitors.

So tell me more about citations and Google Places/Maps/Local.

Having your address and phone number be consistent across all websites is important not only so customers can find you, but because Google and other search engines depend on these mentions to verify your business’s authenticity and because they also score your site based on the amount and consistency of these citations/mentions.

They work just like links–the more you have the better, and the more consistent they are the more confident Google is in your business and your website and will rank you higher. (More detailed info on Google’s ranking factors for local businesses) It makes perfect sense because the more popular a business is, the more people will talk about it and write about it. For example, a restaurant with great service will tend to be mentioned in local newspapers and win awards in city guides, while a lighting fixture manufacturer which launches a cool new design might be mentioned in home remodeling blogs and architectural design websites.

What else? What other types of links can I get? What if my company is brand new? What if my industry is super boring? What if my industry is super competitive?

The link building tips mentioned above should be enough to get most smaller businesses and websites ranking quite well, but if you’d like to go beyond and put some more effort in, there’s an excellent guide on Search Engine Watch titled 131 (Legitimate) Link Building Strategies written by Julie Joyce that you really should check out.

These are general link building tips that any site can benefit from, and keep in mind that most website out there will NOT have anywhere close to this level of effort put in to their SEO and thus are areas you can take advantage of. Here are a few tips I handpicked from the article that I think are important if you run a business that provides a physical product or service.

  • Sponsor something. Sponsor a charity, a contest, an afterschool club at your kid’s school, anything. Great way to get promotion and links
  • Become a content provider. Write something really, really good, something that no one else has yet written. Put a new spin on what you want to say so that it will grab people’s attention. For example, if you’re writing about pest control, then maybe write a piece about how you’re never more than a few feet away from a spider. Shivers.
  • Find something that’s missing and jump into giving it to us. No forum for your industry? Start one. Looking for a list of all the preschools in your town but can’t find one? Do the research, write it, and put it out there for everyone
  • Leave your links everywhere. Link to your site in your email signature. Link to your site in all your social media platforms. Link to your site on your business cards that you will naturally give out at industry events. Tell people about your website.
  • Interview someone. Interviewees usually link back to these interviews, and they’re a great way to get to know people in your industry.
  • Speak up on social media. Do it on Twitter, on Facebook, on Google+, and anywhere else there’s a conversation.
  • Ask to guest post. Approach relevant sites and say hey, would you be interested in having me as a one-time contributor? Be prepared with something though, in case you’re asked for an idea or a writing sample.

People will always bring up the point–and it’s a valid one–that it’s lot easier to get mentions of your business and links to your website if you have a product or service that’s very interesting and/or in demand, but part of it just comes down to marketing and visibility (you can have the best product or service in the world, but if no one knows about it…). If you follow these SEO and link building tips however and start focusing on getting better rankings in the search engines, you will be a lot more exposed to the public and pretty soon you will have more people talking about your business (and linking to it, mentioning it etc.) and that’s a good thing indeed.

If you’re in a very competitive industry or don’t have much time to dedicate to optimizing your website, you should still try to do the things mentioned here (they don’t take as much time as they seem) but you may want to look into hiring an SEO to do an audit of your site and to run a promotions/link building campaign for you. If however you like to do things yourself and want to really dig into SEO and learn more about it (it’s pretty easy after all, and if you have a question Google is always your friend), an excellent and fairly comprehensive guide to general SEO was recently put out by the friendly folks at SEOMOZ and read over 1 million times which is available here: SEO: The Free Beginner’s Guide from SEOmoz.

Thanks for reading and I’ll see you soon!
